Education Philosophy

At St. Joseph School, we strive to provide an outstanding education in a culture infused with gospel values.  Our Catholic identity is reflected in the faith formation of our students, in the building of community rooted in the Holy Spirit, and in the commitment of service to the Christian community.

Our goal is to provide a high quality education for our students through creative and strong educational leadership.  Our staff has high expectation for student achievement.  Our school culture promotes the development of the whole person within the context of the entire church community.

Our Academic Programs

Preschool

Our nationally accredited (NAEYC) preschool offers preschool programming that covers a wide range of age appropriate topics from play, socialization, art and fine motor skills to early writing and reading. Our curriculum and child development philosophy are based on the spirit and ideas of the renowned child psychologist Jean Piaget.

Options include full day and half day programs for 2, 3 or 5 days a week.  Before and after-school care is also offered at the school between the hours of 6:50 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  There are a several field trips each year which are optional, and may be attended by the parents and siblings of the preschoolers.

Children who attend preschool are between two and one-half and five years of age and must be toilet-trained.

Elementary & Middle School

Our elementary school is accredited through the NCEA and the Michigan Private Schools Association.  We build on the foundation from preschool.  Our kindergarten is a full day, five day per week program that bridges the preschool foundation and prepares the children for a lifetime of learning.

From first grade on, children are placed in a true classroom setting.  At this point, we engage those who are able in our Accelerated Reader Program and other advanced learning opportunities.  In addition to the core curriculum of reading, writing, math, science and social studies, all children take Spanish, Music, Art, Physical Education, Computer Education, Library and Religious Instruction.

Children are grouped by ability within classrooms so that those who are able are challenged further, while those needing additional help to master grade level material are given additional help.
